O'Neil tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still at high school. The quality of her singing impressed panel of judges and she received a promotion to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil was praised by the judges. She was however a complete loser in both the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. They were stunned by the decision, and told the audience that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil wasn't in the bottom 3 again after a series of consistently outstanding performances. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, where O'Neil advanced into the final two of the finals of the competition, Werner reportedly forecast that morning papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie as she became her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil got a call from Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on being the winner of Canadian Idol right away.
